Mandarins in September (Australia)

Mandarins in September in Australia: Afourer and late Honey Murcott carry the season, with seedless Tango and Mandared in some shops.

September is the late season in Australia. Afourer mandarin is at peak, late Honey Murcott continues, and the newer seedless varieties (Tango, Mandared) appear in selected retailers. Supermarket prices climb as supply tightens through the month.

What’s in season

  1. Afourer mandarin: peak. Premium seedless variety, deep orange, easy to peel for a late-season mandarin.
  2. Late Honey Murcott mandarin: supply tails off.
  3. Mandared and Tango mandarins: seedless late season varieties at some shops.
  4. Sumo mandarin (Dekopon): still around at premium grocers.
  5. Imperial. finished. Anything labelled Imperial in September is cold-stored fruit and is best avoided.

Where it’s coming from

WA fruit, Riverina, Riverland, and late Queensland blocks. Some Mediterranean climate fruit from southern districts dominates September supply.

What to buy

Afourer is the buy of September. The seedless flesh and clean look make it the easiest mandarin to eat without effort. For cooking, late Honey Murcott still works for the last of the marmalade season.

What to cook

September is the last clean window for mandarin sorbets, curds, and salad dressings. Save some peel for candied mandarin peel before the season ends. Mandarin segments work well in spring salads.
